The Lab Specimen Processor plays a critical role in supporting the technical operations of the laboratory by assisting leadership with day-to-day technical management. This position serves as a knowledgeable resource in the absence of the technical specialist or medical technologist and helps ensure continuity of laboratory services. Acting as a primary point of contact, the Lab Specimen Processor is the first line of communication with hospital medical staff and community partners, requiring exceptional telephone etiquette and communication skills. A strong understanding of laboratory test terminology is essential to accurately relay information, answer inquiries, and support efficient workflow within the laboratory environment.
Job Responsibility:
Verify accuracy of two patient identifiers, specimen collection requirements, test orders, and appropriate collection containers for clinical and anatomic pathology specimens upon receipt in the laboratory
Review specimens for completeness and acceptability in accordance with laboratory and regulatory standards
Prioritize specimen processing according to STAT and routine testing requirements to ensure timely laboratory testing and optimal patient care
Validate, review, and enter requisition information for specimens received from non‑Beebe providers to support accurate patient registration and laboratory processing
Prepare specimens for testing or referral shipment by performing centrifugation and/or aliquoting according to standard operating procedures and reference laboratory guidelines
Identify, troubleshoot, and address specimen collection, labeling, and quality-related issues, communicating with clinical staff as needed to resolve concerns
Follow all biohazard safety policies and procedures, including proper use of the pneumatic tube system, manual specimen transport, blood specimen disposal, and appropriate use and changing of personal protective equipment (PPE)
Serve as a resource for clinicians, clinical staff, new employees, and students by providing instruction and guidance on proper specimen collection, handling, transport, and laboratory requirements
Requirements:
Certification in Phlebotomy or 1-2 years' experience in laboratory accessioning and/or preparing biological specimens for laboratory testing or reference laboratory transport in lieu of Certification
High School Diploma or equivalent required
