Job Description

As the Patent Attorney, you will manage the regional intellectual property portfolio, mitigate IP-related operational risks, and partner with R&D and business teams to secure and commercialize technical innovations.

Job Responsibility

  • Partner with regional R&D teams and the core IP department to identify new inventions and manage the end-to-end patent prosecution process
  • Direct patentability evaluations and Freedom to Operate (FTO) analyses within the designated area to mitigate operational and legal risks
  • Support business divisions in detecting IP infringements, provide actionable counsel, and coordinate enforcement strategies with external legal counsel
  • Monitor and analyze competitors' IP landscapes, delivering strategic insights to business leadership to maintain market advantages
  • Review, draft, and negotiate IP-related agreements, including NDAs, JDAs, licensing, patent assignments, and co-ownership contracts
  • Foster an IP-aware culture across the organization by designing and delivering tailored training programs for engineering and business units

Requirements

  • Advanced degree or solid technical foundation in Chemistry, Materials Science, or a relevant engineering/scientific discipline
  • Fully qualified to practice within the local jurisdiction, including passing the national patent bar examination
  • Proven experience in the complete lifecycle of IP management (acquisition, commercialization, and litigation) gained within a corporate in-house IP department or a reputable specialized IP law firm
  • Prior international education or multicultural work experience is highly preferred
  • Professional fluency in English is mandatory
  • proficiency in additional foreign languages is a plus
  • Outstanding communication, persuasion, and interpersonal skills, with a proactive mindset and the ability to work effectively within global cross-border teams

  • Provide practical legal advice on a wide range of IP matters for data science, engineering, and business teams, including licensing issues tied to product development, tooling, and infrastructure, and issues relating to actual and potential disclosure of IP in external communications
  • Draft, review, and negotiate IP-related terms in commercial and intercompany agreements
  • Partner with cross-functional stakeholders to identify repeatable IP issues and help build templates, guidance, and escalation paths that enable faster, more consistent decision-making
  • Support the open source program by providing legal review and pragmatic guidance on licensing, compliance, and contribution practices (inbound use and outbound releases)
  • Partner with cross-functional stakeholders (e.g., Engineering, Security, Infrastructure, Tech Brand) to improve open source policies and “policy-to-practice” workflows (intake, approvals, documentation, and training)
  • Advise on open source governance topics such as usage & contributing, owning & releasing, and permissions & access
  • Review and advise on external-facing Tech Brand materials, which may include blog posts, technical articles, engineering announcements, conference talks, presentation decks, speaker participation, developer/community programs, events, web content and social media posts
  • Identify and help manage key legal issues in Tech Brand workstreams, including intellectual property, confidentiality and protection of trade secrets, content substantiation and claims risk, third-party rights and permissions, and open source-adjacent considerations
