A key challenge on the path to climate neutrality is storing power generated by renewable sources, for example in the form of hydrogen. Operating the solid oxide cell (SOC) in electrolysis mode as a solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC) enables the direct conversion of electrical energy into chemical energy. Due to its operating temperature of 600 °C and above, the SOEC has the highest electrical efficiency among electrolysis technologies, making it a very promising technology for the hydrogen economy of the future. To improve our understanding of processes occurring during SOEC operation, the cells are experimentally characterized to determine their performance and to provide data for parameterizing or validating physical models that predict cell performance or aging.

Experimentally characterize SOEC single cells using electrochemical techniques
support the commissioning of a new test bench
evaluate experimental data and present the results to an interdisciplinary team
