Volkswagen Group Innovation is working on novel concepts for the mobility of the future. One key research focus is the improvement of vehicle safety in order to achieve Vision Zero, a vision of road traffic without fatalities. In this context, the Group Accident Research department is seeking motivated students for an internship or a thesis project. Automated driving functions, also referred to as driver assistance and safety systems (FAS‑IS), support the driver in performing driving tasks or in managing safety‑critical situations. Various assistance and safety systems, which are either already in series production or currently under research, have different impacts on today’s accident scenarios. The investigation of the effectiveness of these systems can be carried out using existing simulation tools.
Job Responsibility:
Getting familar with the subject areas of accident research and the effectiveness assessment of driver assistance systems (literature studies, accident databases, and methodology)
Working with simulation software for assessing effectiveness through simulation (e.g., openPASS)
Preparing the provided accident database (e.g., GIDAS) for conducting simulations
Supporting the development and integration of software components (e.g., generic driver assistance systems, sensor models, evaluation components…) within the simulation process chain
Supporting the execution of simulations as well as evaluating, analyzing, and presenting the simulation results
Requirements:
Students of automotive engineering, mechanical engineering, computer science, or a comparable field of study
Good to very good academic performance
Programming skills (C++ for the development of software components
R or Python for preparing, executing, and analyzing simulations)
German and English language level B2
Interest in simulation and driver assistance systems
