Requirements

Completed a BSc in Mechanical Engineering, Process Engineering, or a related field and are currently enrolled or have graduated within the last year
Proven experience using CAD for engineering applications and are familiar with technical drawing standards
Strong foundational knowledge in thermodynamics and fluid dynamics, with a practical understanding of small and medium-scale testing process design
Demonstrate adaptability, flexibility, and creativity when facing incomplete or uncertain information
Reliable, structured, and performance-driven, thriving both in fast-paced, collaborative team environments and when working independently
Fluent in English
Available for a full-time 6-month internship, ideally beginning on April 1st 2026

Job Responsibility

Contribute to the rapid testing, engineering, and validation of innovative technology ideas and concepts to ensure reliable results for Direct Air Capture (DAC)
Support the design, development, and engineering of upgrades across Climeworks' testing portfolio, focusing on small to medium-scale systems
Play a key role in improving small to medium-scale test facilities by contributing to their ongoing technological development and refinement
Assess the feasibility of different measurement methods based on test results and practical implementation, providing recommendations for improvements or alternatives
Validate engineered upgrades through careful planning, execution, data analysis, and communicate your findings effectively to relevant stakeholders

Requirements

You hold a bachelor's degree, or you are working towards a master's degree in chemical engineering, chemistry, mechanical engineering, process engineering, materials science, or a related discipline
Enjoy working hands-on in the lab with experience in one of the following: Working in chemical labs, failure analysis, water and gas analysis, characterization of porous materials, adsorption characterization, or prototyping
You have a reliable and motivated mindset, combined with a solution-oriented and structured way of working. You communicate clearly and demonstrate resilience and self-reliance in a research environment

Job Responsibility

You collaborate with cross-functional teams to characterize (and produce) sorbent materials and filter modules for direct air capture
You advance material development, mechanical testing, and analytical methodologies in the chemical lab through independent experimentation and evaluation of new concepts using hypothesis-driven experimental designs
You contribute to sorbent structure optimization by defining research questions, generating and interpreting laboratory data, and supporting evidence-based material improvements

Requirements

You have completed your apprenticeship in chemistry OR your bachelor’s and/or working towards a master’s degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science, or related field
You are available for a 6-month internship with start date preferably in January 2025 or shortly thereafter
You enjoy working hands-on in the laboratory, and you have some classroom or other experience with any of the following: characterization of porous materials (BET, Hg porosimetry, TGA, etc.), adsorption characterization (breakthrough testing, DVS, etc.), wet chemistry and polymer synthesis
You are reliable, motivated and eager to learn new concepts, skills, and tools that you might need to complete your assignments. You are solution-oriented concise and cooperative, with a structured working style

Job Responsibility

Material Scale-Up: support the synthesis, testing and evaluation of sorbent materials for direct air capture ranging from laboratory experimental samples to commercially available materials
Lab Characterization: perform lab-based characterizations, including CO2 adsorption behavior and chemical stability and support the laboratory team with their day-to-day activity including reaction preparation and work-up
Material Processing: support the team in activities related to material processing, including milling and drying, as well as the associated analytics such as PSD and resistivity
Independent Analysis: work independently on tasks to understand properties of sorbent materials and support the team in improving analytical methods
Validation & Reporting: validate, troubleshoot, and clearly document your work to communicate effectively with stakeholders across Climeworks and support larger project goals
