Job Description:

Interim Director of Membership to guide a pivotal period of transition and strengthen their position as the trusted voice of the sector. This interim appointment will provide steady leadership, maintain momentum on key priorities and ensure organisational stability while the permanent Director is appointed.

Job Responsibility:

Strengthen and articulate a clear, compelling membership offer
Build trusted relationships with councils, elected members and strategic partners
Bring sector insight into policy, advocacy and organisational decision-making
Oversee governance, secretariat and operational support functions
Drive strategic projects that enhance culture, collaboration and member value
Support preparations for structural or regional changes affecting members

Requirements:

Strong experience in membership leadership or member-focused roles
A track record of building influence and high-trust relationships across the public sector
Strategic planning and delivery skills, using data and insight to shape decisions
Confidence operating at Board level and navigating politically sensitive contexts
A collaborative, values-led leadership style with excellent communication skills
High emotional intelligence and sound judgement
Ability to steady a directorate, set direction and support teams through transition
Curiosity and openness to innovation, including emerging technologies
Financial awareness and responsible stewardship of resources
A commitment to inclusive, high-performing organisational culture
A relevant degree or professional qualification (MBA/MPA desirable) or equivalent senior-level experience within the public sector or a similarly complex environment
