This role is on the senior leadership team, leading all communications and engagement functions, providing strategy and ensuring the research is landing with their core audience.

Job Responsibility:

  • Shape and lead the vision, design and delivery of a comprehensive, multi‑platform communications and external engagement strategy that strengthens the organisation's profile and influence
  • Manage all public-facing communication channels, including media relations, public affairs, digital content, publications and events to ensure consistent, engaging messaging that reflects organisational priorities
  • Partner closely with policy and research colleagues to turn detailed analytical work into clear, accessible material that reaches key audiences and advances impact objectives
  • Identify, build and sustain relationships with partners, sponsors and influential organisations that enhance visibility, extend reach and help generate new income opportunities
  • Act as a senior representative of the organisation in interactions with high‑level stakeholders across central and local government, political spheres, business, academia and the wider civic community, deepening networks and expanding influence
  • Serve as a primary spokesperson at major conferences, events, meetings and public forums
  • Monitor and analyse political and policy developments to provide insight and strategic guidance that informs organisational decision‑making and forward planning
  • Establish and maintain a strong profile in national and regional media, positioning the organisation as a leading authority on issues related to cities, urban policy and economic development
  • Provide effective, motivating leadership to the External Affairs team, setting clear direction and supporting high quality delivery
  • Play an active role on the senior leadership team, contributing to organisational strategy, decision‑making and positive culture development
  • Oversee financial planning and resource allocation for the External Affairs function, ensuring funds are managed responsibly and creatively
  • Promote a collaborative, impact-focused way of working across the organisation, ensuring external affairs activity is aligned with and embedded into core programmes and operations

Requirements:

  • Experience in managing a team in external affairs, communications, press, and/or a related function within a policy-focused organisation
  • Outstanding strategic communications skills, with a track record of developing and delivering successful multi-channel strategies that build profile and influence
  • Demonstrable experience of engaging senior stakeholders across politics, government, press and business, ideally including securing high-impact partnerships or funding
  • Deep understanding of the UK political and policy landscape and how to navigate and influence it effectively
  • Excellent written, verbal and communication skills, including experience acting as a public spokesperson
