Job Description:

Your primary function is to ensure the theatre teams deliver effective patient care by providing excellent clinical and managerial leadership, within available resources and budgetary objectives. This is presently comprised of 6 Operating rooms, and the decontamination unit. The Nurse Manager will manage, plan, organise and co-ordinate all services relating to both direct and indirect care within the theatres.

Job Responsibility:

  • Provide high level of professional and clinical leadership
  • Manage patient care to ensure highest professional standards using evidence-based approach
  • Monitor quality of service delivery and provide professional advice
  • Ensure all documentation is complete and appropriate information is given to patients
  • Evaluate, develop, lead and manage implementation of best practice policy and procedures within operating theatres
  • Provide appropriate reports to Matron and others
  • Monitor complaints and work with quality and risk manager
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives
  • Lead infection control agenda within operating theatres
  • Provide leadership and direction to nursing personnel
  • Schedule unit personnel promoting optimal use of staff
  • Allocate nursing and support staff appropriately
  • Participate in recruitment and selection of personnel
  • Manage human resources and productivity through performance review programme
  • Monitor absence and ensure proper procedures are adhered to
  • Ensure staff attend mandatory training
  • Promote high level of staff morale and team spirit
  • Maintain flexible schedules to be available to staff on all shifts
  • Exercise leadership by personal example
  • Delegate professional duties to staff
  • Deputise for Matron as indicated
  • Collaborate with hospital personnel and other healthcare providers
  • Make recommendations for improving patient care and staff requirements
  • Support and interpret clinical policies and procedures
  • Organise regular unit meetings and team briefings
  • Provide safe, clean, comfortable and secure environment
  • Maintain effective communication networks
  • Serve on committees within hospital
  • Lead accreditation process within operating theatre and decontamination unit
  • Assess and identify training and development needs for nursing staff
  • Identify teaching and learning opportunities
  • Ensure student nurse educational requirements are met
  • Supervise and assess students
  • Assume responsibility for identifying own educational needs
  • Evaluate own nursing practice and instruction of others
  • Identify appropriate skill mix for Department

Requirements:

  • Registered in the general division of Nursing and Midwifery Board Ireland
  • Category 2 Qualification in Operating Theatre Technique
  • Experience in an acute hospital with operating theatres
  • Management qualification relevant to the post
