Job Description:

Interim Assistant Director – Communications & Public Relations role for a London borough authority. The role provides strategic leadership for council engagement, shapes the public narrative, leads campaigns, and manages a communications team. The position is interim until permanent recruitment is completed.

Job Responsibility:

  • Provide strategic leadership for how the council engages, informs, and builds trust with residents, partners, and stakeholders
  • Shape the council’s public narrative, strengthen its reputation, and ensure communications are proactive, integrated, and aligned with political priorities and organisational values
  • Lead high-impact campaigns, protect and enhance the council’s brand, and support elected members and senior leaders to communicate clearly, consistently and confidently
  • Work closely with Cabinet, the Chief Executive, and the Strategic Leadership team to position the council as an ambitious, collaborative and resident focused organisation
  • Lead a modern, data-informed communications service that reaches people where they are, reflects local identities and ensures that residents have the information they need to live well locally
