Job Description

This is a youth apprentice pharmacy technician positing that corresponds with the Youth Apprentice Program coordinated by the Wisconsin Department of Development. Applicant must be at least 16-years-old and enrolled at an affiliated school in Waukesha County. The youth apprentice must complete a minimum of 450 hours between June 1st and August 31st of the following year. The hours worked will be various and individualized, based on the student's school schedule.

Job Responsibility

  • Observes and assists the pharmacy department to gain knowledge of the pharmacy technician role to determine career path options while in high school
  • Learns and demonstrates the ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with other team members and patients
  • Learns and demonstrates competency in dispensing and delivery of medications. This includes developing competence in the department’s use of information systems, technology, and automation used for dispensing and storage of medications
  • Learns and demonstrates competency in prescription processing, including obtaining required patient information, data entry, record keeping, insurance verification and label generation
  • Learns and demonstrates compliance of legal, regulatory, and accreditation standards. This includes but is not limited to USP requirements, HIPAA, and controlled substance procedures
  • Learns and participates in non-sterile and sterile compounding preparation in accordance with USP guidelines
  • Learns and demonstrates competency in department safety strategies related to error prevention

Requirements

  • Registered as a Pharmacy Technician through Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services (application must be submitted prior to start date) or Registered as a Pharmacy Technician through Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (application must be submitted prior to start date with license obtained within 60 days of date of submission)
  • Currently enrolled as a high school junior or senior
  • Good mathematic skills
  • Attention to details
  • Good communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills
  • Basic computer skills
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time
  • Ability to walk, lift, squat, bend, twist, crawl, kneel, climb, and reach above shoulders throughout the work day
  • Lifts, carries and/or pushes/pulls various items (bags, boxes, carts, etc.) while utilizing proper technique
  • Must be able to: Lift up to 35 lbs from floor to chest-level
  • Lift and carry up to 3 lbs at waist height a reasonable distance
  • Must be able to: Push/pull with 30 lbs of force
