Job Description:

We are partnering with a leading healthcare organization to hire an experienced Inpatient Medical Coder to support high-acuity hospital coding operations. This role requires strong expertise in inpatient facility coding within complex clinical environments, including academic or trauma-based settings. This is an excellent opportunity for coders who are comfortable working independently with complex case mixes and maintaining a high level of accuracy in a fast-paced environment.

Job Responsibility:

  • Review and assign accurate codes for inpatient medical records, including diagnoses and procedures
  • Apply ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, and MS-DRG/APR-DRG methodologies
  • Ensure compliance with coding guidelines, regulatory requirements, and documentation standards
  • Validate completeness and accuracy of clinical documentation and POA indicators
  • Utilize EHR systems and coding tools for accurate code assignment
  • Collaborate with providers through the query process to clarify documentation
  • Participate in audits, quality reviews, and CDI initiatives
  • Maintain productivity and accuracy expectations (high QA standards required)
  • Support documentation quality improvements and reporting metrics such as SOI, ROM, and CMI

Requirements:

  • 3+ years of recent inpatient hospital (facility) coding experience
  • Must be true inpatient coding – not professional fee, outpatient, or insurance-side
  • Strong experience with ICD-10-CM & ICD-10-PCS, MS-DRG assignment, POA indicators
  • Experience working in high-acuity hospital environments (300+ beds preferred)
  • Proven ability to maintain high accuracy (95%+ QA)
  • Strong critical thinking skills and ability to interpret complex documentation
  • Active coding certification (one of the following required): RHIA, RHIT, CCS, CPC, CIC, or COC

Nice to have:

  • 5+ years of inpatient coding / HIM experience
  • Experience in Academic Medical Centers or teaching hospitals
  • Level I Trauma Centers or complex case-mix environments
  • Familiarity with Epic EMR and/or 3M 360
  • Exposure to specialties such as: Neurology, Oncology, Transplant, Trauma, Cardiology, Orthopedics, Critical Care, OB/Newborn
