Job Description

We are looking for an accomplished In-House Real Estate Counsel to provide legal leadership for a privately held real estate organization in New York, New York. This role serves as a trusted advisor to senior leadership and partners closely with leasing, acquisitions, finance, asset management, and operations teams on matters affecting a diverse property portfolio. The position is well suited for a commercially minded attorney who can balance legal risk with practical business objectives in a fast-moving environment.

Job Responsibility

  • Act as the lead legal resource for the company and its principals on day-to-day real estate matters and strategic transactions
  • Prepare, evaluate, and negotiate a broad range of agreements, including retail and commercial leases, purchase and sale contracts, loan documents, joint venture arrangements, and construction-related contracts
  • Counsel internal stakeholders on landlord-tenant issues, zoning considerations, land use matters, development activities, and applicable regulatory obligations
  • Direct external law firms and coordinate legal strategy for disputes, claims, and litigation while helping reduce exposure to risk across the portfolio
  • Advise leadership on entity governance, compliance obligations, and legal considerations tied to ongoing business operations
  • Support property acquisitions, asset sales, refinancing efforts, and portfolio initiatives from structuring through closing
  • Work closely with ownership and cross-functional teams to deliver timely, business-focused legal guidance that supports operational and investment goals

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor from an accredited law school
  • Active license to practice law
  • At least 10 years of legal experience, including significant exposure to real estate matters and preferably prior in-house counsel experience
  • Demonstrated background representing or advising real estate owners, investors, or developers on commercial property matters
  • Strong experience with commercial leasing, real estate transactions, contract drafting, and negotiation
  • Proven ability to apply sound business judgment and offer practical, solution-oriented legal advice
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and organizational skills with the ability to partner effectively across departments
