Reality Labs Research (RL-R) brings together a highly interdisciplinary team of researchers and engineers to create the future of augmented/virtual reality and wearable personal AI devices. The Sensors and Systems Research (SSR) team’s goal is to create ultra low power and lightweight photon-to-inference pipelines that enable all-day, always-on contextual AI. The team cultivates an open environment where individuals thrive. We encourage a sense of ownership and embrace the ambiguity that comes with working on the frontiers of research. The SSR team is looking for an Image Sensor Engineer who has comprehensive experience with developing image sensors and supporting module/system integration. You'll closely partner with research scientists to validate the developed image sensors in camera prototypes and demonstrate new user experiences we aim to enable. You’ll also act as the bridge between research and product teams to ensure the novel imaging technology we develop can be smoothly integrated into the camera subsystems of Meta’s future wearable AR/VR/AI products.

Job Responsibility:

  • Propose specification/functional requirements for customized image sensors and align with stakeholders inside SSR and cross-functional teams
  • Manage the engagement with vendors on customized image sensor development including design, bench-level characterization, ATE-level testing, etc
  • Support internal teams to integrate off-the-shelf image sensors or customized image sensors into camera modules and prototyping systems
  • Implement solutions or engage vendor to provide solutions for the needed sensor configurations to meet system-level requirements

Requirements:

  • Master’s degree in the field of Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or related field
  • 5+ years of experience in image sensor design including readout circuits, pixel driving circuits, controlling circuits, I2C/I3C interfaces and MIPI C/D-PHY in advanced CMOS image sensor process nodes
  • Shipped 1 or more image sensor products in mass production for cellphones or wearable devices
  • Experience with PCB design
  • Experience with image sensor characterization
  • Experience with image sensor ATE-level testing
  • Familiar with pixel operating principles for both rolling-shutter and global-shutter image sensors
  • Familiar with state-of-the-art 3D stacking process for image sensors fabrication
  • Familiar with image signal processor (ISP) functions

Nice to have:

  • A Ph.D. degree in the field of Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or related field
  • Experience with image signal processor (ISP) design
  • Experience with camera system design for cellphones or wearable devices
  • Familiar with camera optics, understands the relationship and trade-offs among various camera specifications such as pixel size, image area, field of view, angular resolution, MTF etc

  • System Architecture & Design Leadership: Lead the architectural definition and design of complex camera modules and imaging systems, balancing optical, electrical, mechanical, lighting, and software considerations. Drive critical design decisions and contribute to the product roadmap
  • Advanced Imager & Lens Expertise: Spearhead the research, evaluation, and selection of cutting-edge image sensors based on rigorous performance criteria, including high dynamic range, low-light sensitivity, noise performance, and power efficiency. Define and critically evaluate optical lens systems for optimal performance, ensuring excellence in MTF, distortion, chromatic aberration, and stray light control. Design lighting to optimize image quality and power. Act as a primary technical liaison with imager, DSP, camera lens and optical component vendors, influencing future development
  • Rigorous Prototyping & Characterization: Develop and execute advanced test plans for camera prototypes, performing deep-dive characterization of imager and lens performance. Utilize and develop measurement techniques for noise analysis, linearity, spectral response, and other key parameters
  • Image Quality Mastery & Tuning: Design, implement, and lead comprehensive objective and subjective image quality (IQ) testing, covering parameters like color accuracy, white balance, exposure, sharpness, and noise. Employ and potentially develop advanced image quality analysis tools (e.g., Imatest). Work with ODM, Image and ISP SoC vendors to expertly calibrate and fine-tune Image Signal Processor (ISP) parameters to achieve industry-leading image quality across diverse challenging environments and use cases. Proactively identify, diagnose, and resolve complex image quality artifacts and propose innovative solutions
  • Validation & Production Readiness: Own the development and execution of robust validation plans for production-ready camera systems, ensuring compliance with all functional, performance, reliability, and regulatory requirements
