An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine to join a high-performing critical care service in the East Midlands. This full-time substantive post offers the chance to work within a busy Intensive Care Unit providing 24/7 specialist critical care services across acute hospital sites. The successful candidate will report to the Clinical Lead for Intensive Care Medicine and play a key role in delivering advanced critical care to adult patients requiring complex intervention, while supporting governance, education, patient safety, and service improvement. Candidates with dual accreditation are welcome, with scope for up to 2 programmed activities in another speciality, subject to agreement.
Job Responsibility:
Provide Consultant-led specialist care to critically ill adult patients within the ICU
Conduct twice-daily ward rounds to ensure safe and effective patient management
Prescribe and administer emergency medications when clinically required
Supervise junior doctors, middle-grade doctors, and Advanced Critical Care Practitioners
Support emergency referrals and provide clinical advice to other specialities, including Emergency Medicine and Anaesthesia
Work collaboratively with nursing coordinators and the wider MDT to ensure safe unit flow and staffing
Communicate sensitively with patients' families regarding critical illness, treatment escalation, and end-of-life decisions where required
Participate in research, innovation, audit, governance, and quality improvement activities
Maintain CPD, appraisal, revalidation, and mandatory training requirements
Support cross-site service delivery where operationally required
Requirements:
Recognised medical degree
Fellowship of the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine (FICM) or equivalent
CCT in Intensive Care Medicine
Full GMC Registration with a licence to practise
Entry on the GMC Specialist Register or eligibility for registration
Training and experience working in an Intensive Care Unit in an acute UK hospital
