You will be a key member of a small and dedicated hydrant maintenance team, working across Leicester, Leicestershire, and Rutland. Fire hydrants are a critical component of the water supply infrastructure used in firefighting operations, and ensuring their reliability is essential to the effective delivery of our emergency response services. This is an active, field-based role requiring you to travel between locations, often working independently in a busy outdoor environment. This is a challenging but rewarding position that offers the opportunity to develop practical skills, work independently, and contribute directly to the safety of our staff and communities.
Job Responsibility:
Inspection and routine maintenance of fire hydrants located within the public highway
Assess the condition and accessibility of fire hydrants
Carry out visual checks
Ensure hydrants are fully operational using appropriate equipment
Identify and report faults or defects in line with service procedures
Support the delivery of the hydrant inspection programme across existing infrastructure and new developments
Operate a service vehicle
Work outdoors
Update records and report defects using the digital Water Management System
Liaise professionally with contractors, fire service personnel, and members of the public
Requirements:
Previous experience working within or around the public highway
Strong understanding of health and safety, including risk assessment
Excellent verbal communication skills
Good written communication skills
Confidence in the use of hand tools and basic testing equipment
Ability to work independently in a busy outdoor environment
Ability to travel between locations
Willingness to start early to meet team needs
Willingness to work four Sunday mornings per year
