We are looking for an experienced Human Resources (HR) Manager to join our team on a contract basis in Chicago, Illinois. This role offers an opportunity to work within a nonprofit organization, supporting a diverse workforce of employees, interns, volunteers, and contractors. The ideal candidate will bring strong expertise in employee relations, union negotiations, and payroll operations, while demonstrating a proactive and customer-focused approach to HR management.
Job Responsibility:
Manage employee relations, addressing concerns and resolving workplace issues to maintain a positive and productive environment
Provide support for union-related activities, including negotiations and ensuring compliance with union agreements
Assist with payroll processes by handling backend HR functions and collaborating with the finance team for accurate execution
Ensure compliance with employment laws and regulations, supporting audits and gathering necessary documentation
Oversee HR operations such as onboarding, benefits administration, and general coordination of HR functions
Act as a strategic partner to the HR Director, taking on mid-level tasks and responsibilities to enable the Director to focus on higher priorities
Support HRIS operations, ensuring accurate data management and reporting
Engage employees and foster a culture of service excellence to enhance workforce satisfaction and retention
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to align HR strategies with organizational goals
Research and recommend improvements to HR practices and processes to enhance efficiency and effectiveness
Requirements:
Proven experience in employee relations, with the ability to handle complex workplace issues independently
Familiarity with union environments and experience managing union-related activities
Knowledge of payroll operations, specifically backend HR functions, and collaboration with finance teams
Strong understanding of compliance requirements, including audits and documentation management
Proficiency in HRIS systems and HR administration tools
Experience in onboarding and benefits management
Customer-focused mindset with excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment, demonstrating adaptability and resilience
