Bachelor’s Degree, Diploma or Certificate in Health & Safety, Ergonomics, Occupational Hygiene or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education
A Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation or an equivalent certification (such as CSP, ROH, or CIH) is preferred
A minimum of 5 years of occupational health and safety-related experience in an industrial unionized setting
Experience developing and implementing Safety Management Systems
Thorough knowledge of all applicable Federal and Provincial legislations regarding Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S), Marine OH&S, plus any other relevant laws and regulations
Effective time management, organizational, and problem-solving skills including understanding the accident phenomenon
Excellent communication (verbal and written) and presentation skills, including the ability to effectively transfer knowledge to a diverse group of learners
Must be able to work independently and initiate new ideas to challenge the status quo
Strong interpersonal and negotiation skills
Must be able to coach, facilitate and influence a cultural and behavioural change in the workplace

Job Responsibility

Acts as the subject matter expert (SME) on all aspects of safety, health and in some cases environment, including the Seaspan ULC Safety Management System
Provides expertise for the development of administrative controls in conjunction with the joint Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) committees
Continuous collaboration with management, safety and health committees, unionized employees, major customers and contractors for the company regarding proactive solutions to safety and health related problems
Provides expertise to ensure that the workplace meets all applicable occupational health and safety standards
Provides leadership and guidance to the ship Safety Officers and shore-based workers
Coordinates workplace audits and inspections (shore and shipboard) to evaluate compliance with regulatory standards, best practices and Seaspan ULC corporate policies
Interfaces with the client regarding client-specific safety-related requirements, reporting and record keeping
Seeks to understand the safety culture and behaviours that drive how work is performed and managed in the workplace
Educates, coaches and challenges workers and supervisors with respect to their roles and responsibilities in workplace health and safety
Monitors the training matrix to ensure workers and supervisors comply
