We are looking for an HR Generalist to join a real estate property and facilities management organization in Norfolk, Virginia. This contract opportunity is suited for a human resources team member who can balance employee support, regulatory awareness, and day-to-day HR operations across a dynamic workforce. The role will partner with leaders and employees on workplace concerns, benefits and leave administration, performance processes, and policy guidance while helping maintain a compliant and well-supported employee experience.
Job Responsibility
Provide day-to-day HR guidance to managers and staff on employee relations matters, workplace policies, training needs, benefits questions, and general employment practices
Monitor adherence to federal, state, and local labor requirements by reviewing HR procedures, recommending updates, and helping ensure organizational practices remain compliant
Support employee investigations and corrective action processes by participating in disciplinary discussions, documentation reviews, and separation meetings as needed
Respond to employee and supervisor questions related to employment issues, resolving routine matters directly and elevating more complex concerns when appropriate
Conduct offboarding conversations, compile feedback themes, and share insights with HR leadership to identify recurring issues and improvement opportunities
Administer unemployment claim activity for assigned departments, including coordination of documentation and follow-up responses
Partner with supervisors to create and track performance improvement plans, ensuring expectations, documentation, and follow-up steps are clearly outlined
Coordinate the annual performance review cycle for designated teams by managing schedules, collecting supporting materials, and facilitating completion of evaluations
Oversee leave administration from initial notice through return to work, including eligibility review, required documentation, communication with employees and leaders, and coordination of accommodations, workers' compensation, disability, and related leave matters
Contribute to employee engagement efforts by supporting recognition activities and participating in local development sessions to bring back relevant HR knowledge and best practices
Requirements
Experience in human resources generalist work with strength in employee relations, HR administration, and policy interpretation
Knowledge of employment law compliance at the federal, state, and local levels, including leave and accommodation requirements
Hands-on background administering employee benefits and coordinating leave programs such as medical, disability, and return-to-work cases
Ability to manage sensitive conversations, workplace investigations, disciplinary matters, and performance-related documentation with professionalism and discretion
Familiarity with onboarding, orientation for permanent employees, personnel file maintenance, and annual performance review processes
Proficiency using HRIS platforms and standard business software to maintain records, track workflow, and support reporting needs
Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to work effectively with employees, supervisors, and senior leadership
