We are looking for an experienced HR Generalist / Manager to support a non-profit organization in Illinois through a broad range of human resources functions. This contract opportunity with potential for a permanent role is ideal for someone who can balance day-to-day employee support with strategic guidance for leadership while fostering a compliant, service-focused workplace. The person in this role will help strengthen recruitment, employee relations, benefits administration, and policy execution across a diverse workforce.
Job Responsibility
Provide day-to-day guidance to employees and leaders on workplace concerns, performance matters, corrective action, and conflict resolution while promoting a respectful and productive environment
Manage the full recruitment cycle by preparing postings, reviewing applicants, coordinating interviews, supporting selection decisions, and facilitating a smooth onboarding experience for new team members
Monitor HR practices to ensure alignment with applicable employment laws and organizational policies, and update procedures or handbook content as needed to reduce risk
Oversee benefits and leave administration, serve as the point of contact for employee questions, and coordinate with external vendors on enrollments and program support
Assist with labor and union-related matters, including interpretation of agreements, grievance support, and partnership with leadership on consistent application of contract terms
Organize and deliver training initiatives focused on compliance, leadership development, performance management, and employee engagement
Maintain accurate employee information within HR systems, prepare reports for leadership, and identify ways to improve HR workflows and operational efficiency
Partner with department leadership on workforce planning, organizational development, staffing priorities, and other people-related initiatives tied to business goals and budget considerations
Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Public Administration, Business Administration, or a related field
At least 3 years of progressive experience in human resources, with broader leadership responsibility preferred for manager-level consideration
Strong working knowledge of employment law, HR compliance standards, and established people operations practices
Experience supporting multiple departments and, ideally, working in a unionized or public-sector style environment
Demonstrated ability to manage employee relations, onboarding, benefits administration, and HR systems effectively
Excellent communication, judgment, and problem-solving skills with the ability to build trust across all levels of the organization
Ability to handle confidential information with professionalism, discretion, and sound decision-making
