We are looking for an experienced HR Business Partner to support a university environment in Norfolk, Virginia. This Long-term Contract position will focus on strengthening employee relations practices, guiding leaders on policy interpretation, and helping create a consistent, compliant workplace culture. The role is well suited for an HR specialist who can balance day-to-day advisory support with thorough investigations and performance management guidance.
Job Responsibility
Advise managers and department leaders on employee relations matters, workplace concerns, and appropriate resolution strategies.
Interpret and apply HR policies to support fair, consistent, and compliant decision-making across the organization.
Conduct and document workplace investigations involving employee complaints, policy concerns, and other sensitive personnel issues.
Partner with leadership to address performance challenges through coaching, corrective action guidance, and follow-up planning.
Provide hands-on HR support related to employee administration, including case management and issue escalation.
Identify recurring workforce issues and recommend practical improvements to policies, procedures, and management practices.
Maintain accurate records of investigations, employee relations cases, and HR actions in alignment with institutional standards.
Collaborate with internal stakeholders to promote a respectful, policy-driven, and well-structured work environment.
Requirements
At least 5 years of experience in human resources, with strong exposure to HR business partnering or employee relations work.
Demonstrated ability to manage employee relations investigations with sound judgment, discretion, and attention to detail.
Working knowledge of HR policy interpretation and application in a complex organizational setting.
Experience supporting performance management processes, including coaching leaders on employee issues.
Background in HR administration and handling sensitive personnel matters with confidentiality.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build trust across different levels of an organization.
Ability to organize multiple priorities, document cases thoroughly, and manage issues in a timely manner.
