The Hospitality Assessor and Commercial Development Lead plays a pivotal role in supporting the growth and quality of Colchester Institute’s Hospitality and Salon Studies provision. This is a hands-on role combining assessment, coaching, and commercial development, ensuring learners gain real industry experience in environments that mirror professional practice.
Job Responsibility
Assess and coach apprentices across hospitality programmes, ensuring progress toward timely completion and End Point Assessment (EPA)
Champion the growth of the area’s commercial profile, promoting the restaurant, salons, and adult training opportunities
Engage employers to strengthen work placements and apprenticeship uptake
Deliver the BIIAB Personal Licence Qualification and utilise this to enhance the college’s offer to employers and adult learners
Guide apprentices towards timely completion, Gateway readiness, and End-Point Assessment
Deliver tailored coaching and provide clear, actionable feedback
Recognise individual learning needs and ensure appropriate support is in place
Contribute to the delivery and assessment of commercial qualifications
Support the ongoing development of high-quality learning programmes that reflect current industry practices and employer needs
Work closely with employers to build strong partnerships, secure work placements, and ensure training aligns with business requirements
Support the growth of the college’s commercial provision by contributing to promotional activities, events, and new business opportunities
Help maintain excellent customer and learner experiences within commercial environments
Maintain accurate records, meeting compliance requirements
Contribute to quality assurance and continuous improvement processes
Embody and promote the college’s values, ensuring a safe, inclusive, and high-quality learning environment for all
Requirements
Experience assessing or training apprentices in Hospitality Apprenticeship Standards
Awareness of Health & Safety, Food Safety, and safeguarding requirements
Proficiency in digital systems (Microsoft Office, Smart Assessor, or similar)
Experience in an educational or training environment
Experience working in a commercial restaurant, hotel, or catering environment
Good communication skills with ability to work effectively with employers, customers, academic and support staff
Strong communication and relationship-building skills with employers and learners
Experience of coordinating or supporting work placements
Up-to-date knowledge of apprenticeship standards and EPA requirements
Good administration and organisational skills
Minimum of Level 2 qualification in English and Mathematics GCSE 4+ or C and above / CSE Level 1 / O-Level C or above / Level 2 Adult Numeracy or Literacy or equivalent
Level 3 qualification in Catering, Hospitality, or equivalent vocational area (or a willingness to achieve in post)
Assessor/Verifier Awards
BIIAB Personal Licence qualification or willingness to complete
Teaching qualification at level 3 or above (or a willingness to achieve in post)
