Job Responsibility

  • Certify patient eligibility for hospice care at admission and each benefit period
  • Serve as attending physician for patients without a primary physician when requested, including providing orders and signing death certificates
  • Provide or coordinate 24/7 medical coverage and clinical consultation for hospice patients and team members
  • Participate in the development, evaluation, and revision of individualized plans of care as part of the interdisciplinary team
  • Lead best practices in pain and symptom management
  • Conduct medically necessary visits (in person or via telehealth when appropriate)
  • Collaborate with attending physicians to resolve care conflicts and ethical concerns
  • Contribute to clinical protocols, standing orders, policies, and quality improvement initiatives
  • Participate in education for healthcare professionals and the community regarding hospice and palliative care
  • Serve as a professional ambassador and advocate for hospice care within the medical community

Requirements

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathy (DO), licensed in the Commonwealth of Virginia
  • Board Certified or Board Eligible in Hospice and Palliative Medicine (preferred)
  • Minimum of two (2) years of clinical experience
  • hospice or palliative care experience strongly preferred
  • Strong understanding of hospice philosophy and symptom management
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and leadership skills
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse populations and complex family dynamics
  • Valid driver’s license, required insurance, and willingness to travel within the service area
