Job Description

As an HDD Operator at HBI, you will be installing cable to bring new and upgraded phone and internet service to keep our communities connected.

Job Responsibility

  • Set up and operate a horizontal directional drill to safely install cable underground
  • Operate various other construction equipment required in placing cable (cable plow, backhoe, mini excavator, trencher, etc.)
  • Consult with Foreman on different approaches to complete the job safely and efficiently
  • Communicate any possible, existing, or unforeseen problems that may arise
  • Perform daily preventative maintenance on equipment (greasing, checking oil & hydraulic fluid, cleaning, fueling, etc.)
  • Perform all basic labor required to complete the job including loading & unloading supplies, placing signs, cones and barriers as needed, hand digging, feeding cable, securing the job site & equipment at the end of the day, job site restoration

Requirements

  • One-year experience operating a horizontal directional drill preferred
  • Safely operate heavy equipment such as a cable plow, backhoe, mini excavator, etc.
  • Experience digging around utilities preferred
  • Safety and quality focused
  • Enjoys physical work outdoors and staying busy
  • Willing to travel local & statewide as needed (overnight M-F, home most weekends)
  • Valid, insurance-acceptable driver’s license required
  • Restriction-free Class A CDL is preferred
  • Experience locating a plus

  • Reading blueprints or job orders for product specifications: dimensions, tolerances, tooling instructions, fixtures, feed rates, cutting speeds, depth of cut, sequence of operations, and positioning of tools
  • Communicate with supervisor, engineers, production control, quality and other shop personnel for assignments and to resolve machining or quality issues
  • Setup, operate and maintain a variety of machine tools including computer numerical controlled (CNC) tools to perform precision, non-repetitive machining operations such as sawing, turning, milling, boring, planning, drilling, precision grinding and other operations
  • Responsible for keeping equipment and work area clean and orderly and perform basic preventative maintenance functions on equipment
  • Ensuring that parts are created in a timely manner according to the schedule provided and according to the quality standards of the organization
  • Cross train to learn other types of CNC equipment to have multiple skills
  • Verify dimensions of machined part or tooling using micrometers, verniers, calipers, height gauges, optical comparators, or other specialized measuring instruments
  • Report deviations from specifications and tolerances to supervisor
