Under the direction and supervision of laboratory leadership at all times and with some latitude to work independently, the Histotechnician Lead is responsible for section optimization of all of the functions of processing tissue samples for histological diagnosis by a pathologist. When primarily executing operational oversight duties, the Lead will facilitate advanced daily operational flow and make recommendations for process improvement. For Leads supporting educational activities, the purpose of this job is to support the educational responsibilities related to the teaching of histological techniques, processes and procedures for a variety of educational programs including: medical technologist, medical lab technician and histology. In both roles, knowledge of histology processes will be required and incudes (but not exclusive to): grossing, embedding, microtomy, special stains and processing Immunohistochemistry slides. This position requires theoretical insight, moderate skill, judgement and the knowledge of principle and methods of Histotechnology. This position is also responsible for equipment maintenance, daily quality control, and adherence to all policies (Hospital and Laboratory). Communicates with internal and external clients clearly and professionally. Reports to work at assigned UR Labs location/site.
Job Responsibility:
Facilitates advanced daily operational workflow assessments in real time
Creates and implements recommendations for Process Improvement
Maintains high level of Quality Assurance
Ensures maintenance on laboratory equipment including but not limited to preventative, routine and troubleshooting
With direction from the clinical supervisors and advisement from the Education Manager, creates and implements education processes within the histopathology laboratories for students
Gross sections of human tissue for examination
Operates laboratory equipment to embed, section and stain specimens
Performs special staining and Immunohistochemistry stains as requested
Some manual staining may be required
Follows all departmental and organizational policies, procedures, quality objectives and safety standards and keeps current with changes in laboratory processes and procedures
Examine slides under microscope to ensure that slides meet laboratory quality standards
Supports the training of other technologists, technicians and/or residents
Requirements:
Associates degree in Histotechnology or Medical/Clinical Laboratory Technology
2 years’ experience in histopathology laboratory

Microsoft
ASCP certification as HT or MLT
Valid NYS License as a Histological Technician (HT) or Medical/Clinical Laboratory Technician (MLT)
