Job Description:

We’re looking for a dedicated Highway Inspector to join our team, carrying out essential inspections and helping us deliver a high-quality, proactive highway maintenance service. This is a foot-based inspection role, ideal for someone who enjoys working outdoors, walking long distances, and taking real ownership of their network. This role requires significant daily walking, working outdoors in all weather conditions, and occasional weekly driven inspections.

Job Responsibility:

  • Carry out Category 1 statutory safety inspections and Category 2 asset condition inspections
  • Identify, assess and categorise defects in line with the Assess & Decide Policy
  • Raise accurate work orders in CONFIRM for the Operations Team
  • Provide clear responses to members of the public where required
  • Support Local Network Teams with valuable on-the-ground intelligence to inform planned works programmes
  • Act as a “network watchman”, spotting issues early and taking pride in the condition of your area

Requirements:

  • ONC/City & Guilds 6033 – Highway Safety Inspection Award or equivalent (desirable)
  • NRSWA Supervisor accreditation
  • Strong understanding of defect identification, risk assessment and inspection categories
  • Experience raising work orders in CONFIRM
  • Knowledge of inspection standards including the Well-Maintained Highways Code of Practice
  • Understanding of civil engineering/highways operations, H&S and TMA compliance
  • Local knowledge of London boroughs (advantageous)
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy
  • Confident making decisions based on policy and on-site assessment
  • Comfortable using mobile technology and digital reporting tools
  • Positive “network pride” mindset with ownership of inspection routes
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work independently
  • Proactive approach to safety – leading by example
