Job Description:

The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is committed to providing a safe, high-quality, and efficient transportation system for the people of Wyoming. We are currently seeking a Highway Maintenance Technician for our Maintenance Program located in Afton, Wyoming. As a Highway Maintenance Technician, you will perform a variety of roadway maintenance duties—under limited supervision—to help keep Wyoming’s transportation system safe and reliable for the traveling public.

Job Responsibility:

  • Maintains and operates complex equipment safely and proficiently
  • Assists with training other technicians in the operation and maintenance of equipment
  • Under limited supervision, flags traffic and sets up traffic control devices
  • Operates heavy equipment, including, but not limited to: single and tandem axle trucks, equipped with an auger, aerial lift equipment, or equipped with plows, wing plows, sanders, and chemical systems to remove snow and ice from roadway surface
  • Responsible for the rehabilitation of roadway surfaces and/or traffic control devices such as signs and pavement markings
  • Responsible for general maintenance of highway-related facilities such as rest areas
  • this may include performing water and wastewater treatment according to EPA and DEQ requirements
  • Attends and completes all state and federal training required to obtain/maintain certifications, perform inspections, and learn new skills
  • Communicates information in order to update others' status and/or process effectiveness
  • Utilizes computers for agency practices, such as for training and performance evaluations, and keeps up to date on technological advances with specialized equipment
  • Performs duties involved in removing snow and ice from roadways
  • determines the effectiveness of treatments and may determine when a change in treatment is necessary
  • Responsible for adhering to all state and federal safety and quality standards, including the correct use of all associated personal protective equipment

Requirements:

  • 2-4 years of relevant work experience (typically in Highway Maintenance/Highway Construction)
  • Must have the ability to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License within twelve (12) months of hire
  • Associate's Degree (typically in Engineering) with 0-1 year of relative work experience (typically in Highway Maintenance/Highway Construction)
  • Must have the ability to obtain water certifications if necessary
  • Must have the ability to obtain a Certification to operate specified equipment as directed by WYDOT
  • Must have the ability to obtain a Certificate of course completion in Defensive Driving
  • Must have the ability to obtain a First Aid/CPR certification
  • Must have the ability to obtain a Flagger certification

Nice to have:

Preference may be given to applicants who have a current Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements prior to employment
