We are currently seeking a Highway Maintenance & Avalanche Forecaster for our Maintenance Program located in Jackson. Job Responsibility:
Lead and support a maintenance team in the field
Perform road maintenance duties including snow removal, surface repairs, and equipment operation
Ensure compliance with safety regulations and WYDOT standards
Provide on-call assistance during emergencies or adverse weather conditions
Compiles, analyzes, and interprets field observations data from a wide variety of sources, including remote weather stations
Analyzes mesoscale and synoptic scale meteorological conditions and patterns
Forecasts for wind speed, direction, and duration, temperatures, precipitation type, snowfall amounts, rainfall amounts, and rain/snow line elevations
Forecasts for anticipated avalanche activity based on pre-existing snowpack conditions and the forecasted weather’s impact on those conditions
Determines Highway Avalanche Hazard Rating and provides work direction regarding maintenance operations and necessary precautions
Communicates forecast to internal and external stakeholders
Performs snow, weather, and avalanche field testing and observations utilizing industry specific equipment in multiple highway corridors with over seventy avalanche paths
Observes and records avalanche activity
Performs weekly checks on all remote avalanche mitigation systems
repairs gas systems at elevations of 10,000 feet
Schedules and manages helicopter long line flight operations in support of delivering oxygen, propane, and Obellx units to and from field locations
Carries explosive rounds, black powder blasting cups, blasting caps and safety fuses
assembles high order explosives and arms machinery
Deploys RACS, detonates hand thrown or dropped explosives on foot and via helicopter, and fires Howitzer according to specialized trainings, standards, and protocols
Operates and maintains weather stations, determines weather data collection locations, ensures proper power supply, programs data loggers and communications systems, monitors communication and data transfer quality, and repairs communication issues
Makes decisions to close and reopen highways
coordinates the work of others to perform road closures, avalanche mitigation, and avalanche debris cleanup
Performs highway maintenance to maintain roadways
Requirements:
Bachelor's Degree (typically in Management)
0-2 years of progressive work experience (typically in Highway Maintenance/Highway Construction) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Highway Maintenance Specialist
Class A Commercial Driver’s License
OR 3-5 years of progressive work experience (typically in Highway Maintenance/Highway Construction) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Highway Maintenance Specialist
Class A Commercial Driver’s License
Ability to lift and/or carry 50 pounds independently
Ability to stand/sit and operate equipment for long periods of time
Ability to walk for long periods on even and uneven ground
Must be available for emergency work calls at any time, including nights, weekends, and holidays
Must report to the Department Shop within 30 minutes of receiving a call
Must pass a pre-employment drug screening and/or physical
Subject to random drug and alcohol testing
Must have the ability to successfully complete training provided by WYDOT: Certification to operate specified equipment, Defensive Driving, First Aid/CPR certification, and Flagger certification
Occasional overnight travel is required
