Job Description

The Illinois Department of Transportation seeks to hire a Highway Maintainer to perform a variety of tasks related to the maintenance, repair and upkeep of roads, bridges and other related structures and features.

Job Responsibility

  • Operates CDL Class A licensed vehicles
  • Performs labor relating to maintenance of roadways
  • Assists in snow and ice control
  • Performs labor relating to maintenance of roadside and right-of-way
  • Performs routine housekeeping duties at headquarters
  • Removes and disposes of trash, dead animals and other debris along highways
  • Maintains on the job records
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned

Requirements

  • Completion of four years of high school
  • Possession of a Class A CDL with X or N endorsement and no airbrake restrictions
  • One year driving experience immediately preceding appointment free of incidents which could result in license suspension or revocation

As a result, negotiated rate employees are required to work reasonable amounts of overtime when necessary. Any bargaining unit employee who may be required to engage in a call out shall respond to the call as quickly as practicable but in no situation can the response time exceed 45 minutes

  • Analyzes mesoscale and synoptic scale meteorological conditions and patterns
  • Forecasts for wind speed, direction, and duration, temperatures, precipitation type, snowfall amounts, rainfall amounts, and rain/snow line elevations
  • Forecasts for anticipated avalanche activity based on pre-existing snowpack conditions and the forecasted weather’s impact on those conditions
  • Determines Highway Avalanche Hazard Rating and provides work direction regarding maintenance operations and necessary precautions
  • Communicates forecast to internal and external stakeholders
