Job Description

We are partnering with a community-focused organization seeking a compassionate and dependable Helpline Counselor to provide support to individuals experiencing emotional, behavioral, or mental health challenges. This is a contract-to-hire opportunity for someone who is an excellent listener, communicates with empathy, and is committed to helping others navigate difficult situations. In this role, you'll serve as a trusted point of contact, providing emotional support, connecting callers with appropriate resources, and documenting each interaction with professionalism and care.

Job Responsibility

  • Answer incoming calls from individuals seeking emotional or behavioral health support
  • Provide compassionate, nonjudgmental assistance while remaining calm during sensitive conversations
  • Assess caller needs and connect individuals with appropriate behavioral health, crisis intervention, or community resources
  • Accurately document call details, case notes, and follow-up actions while maintaining strict confidentiality
  • Support ongoing case coordination and ensure continuity of care when additional follow-up is needed
  • Utilize call management systems and electronic documentation tools to maintain accurate records
  • Participate in ongoing training related to crisis intervention, suicide prevention, and behavioral health best practices

Requirements

  • Fluent in English and Creole or English and Spanish
  • Bachelor's degree in Psychology, Behavioral Health, Social Work, Human Services, or a related field required
  • 1–2 years of experience in behavioral health, mental health services, crisis intervention, case management, patient support, or a similar helping profession
  • Excellent communication and active listening skills with the ability to quickly build trust over the phone
  • Ability to remain calm, empathetic, and professional while assisting individuals in emotionally challenging situations
  • Strong documentation, organizational, and computer skills

Nice to have

Previous call center, healthcare, nonprofit, or customer support experience is a plus
