Job Description

The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is seeking a dedicated and skilled Heavy Equipment Mechanic to join our team. Under direct supervision, this position is responsible for performing maintenance and repair on a wide range of diesel and automotive equipment. Duties include engine overhauls and tune-ups for both diesel and gasoline engines, as well as maintenance and repair of braking systems, steering components, transmissions, and hydraulic systems. This role is essential to ensuring the reliability and safety of equipment that supports transportation operations throughout the region.

Job Responsibility

  • Conducts a wide variety of preventive maintenance and/or repairs on various diesel and automotive equipment, along with other self-propelled or towed equipment
  • Performs safety inspections on all types of diesel and automotive equipment
  • Reads and interprets technical manuals to diagnose and correct problems on vehicles and equipment
  • Rigs and fabricates new equipment to district standards
  • Creates repair orders
  • Responsible for the inventory of the shop, equipment, and supplies
  • Designs and fabricates parts for tractors, mowers, and machinery for specialized applications

Requirements

  • 2-4 years of progressive work experience (typically in Heavy Mechanics)
  • Knowledge of methods and techniques of diesel and automotive maintenance and repair
  • Knowledge of electronic principles and diagnostic tools
  • Knowledge of light and heavy-duty automotive equipment and its parts (i.e., hydraulics, hydrostatics, drive trains, gas, and diesel engine overhauls)
  • Knowledge of grease and oil specifications
  • Knowledge of general servicing of equipment
  • Knowledge of policies and safe work procedures
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a CDL
  • Ability to lift and/or carry 50 pounds independently
  • Ability to stand/sit and operate equipment for long periods
  • Work in adverse environmental conditions
  • Working around high-speed traffic and heavy construction equipment
