The Health and Safety Manager will lead and oversee Newton Group’s health and safety programs to ensure compliance with provincial legislation, industry standards, and company policies. This role is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining effective health and safety procedures across our sites and operations. Working closely with project teams and the Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC), the Health and Safety Manager will foster a strong safety culture, provide training, conduct inspections, and ensure continuous improvement in safety performance.
Job Responsibility:
Promote and maintain a strong health and safety culture across the organization
Plan, organize, and implement programs and procedures to ensure compliance with legislation, industry standards, and corporate policies
Develop, maintain, and review project-specific safety plans
Maintain organisational COR Status
Provide guidance and leadership to all divisions, with active participation in JHSC activities
Lead and participate in JHSC meetings
Deliver health and safety training and toolbox talks for workers, supervisors, and management
Conduct regular site inspections, audits, and hazard assessments
document findings and verify corrective actions are implemented
Lead or support incident investigations, including root cause analysis and reporting for high-risk incidents
Maintain accurate health and safety records, reports, and documentation
Monitor trends in incident and loss data to identify areas for improvement and implement preventive measures
Liaise with regulatory bodies, industry associations, and external auditors as required
Support WSIB claims management, modified work programs, and return-to-work planning
Requirements:
Formal education in Occupational Health and Safety and/or Risk Management
Formal safety designation such as NCSO considered an asset
5–10 years of experience in Health & Safety, with at least 3–5 years in the construction industry (ICI construction preferred)
Strong knowledge of the Ontario Construction and Industrial Regulations under the OHSA
Experience with the COR 2020 program and audits
Experience with the WSIB Health & Safety Excellence Program considered an asset
JHSC Part 1 certified and working towards Part 2 Construction
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
experience with digital Health and Safety Management Systems (HSMS) considered an asset
Standard First Aid and AED certification
Strong organizational, coaching, communication, and interpersonal skills
Ability to work independently, multi-task, and manage deadlines in a fast-paced environment
Flexibility and willingness to travel to job sites as required
Valid driver’s license required
Nice to have:
Formal safety designation such as NCSO
Experience with the WSIB Health & Safety Excellence Program
Experience with digital Health and Safety Management Systems (HSMS)
