The Head Tutor Advisor duties are peer mentoring, guiding, chaperoning, and supervising students during the six-week Upward Bound Summer Chautauqua for high school students. The Head TA is responsible for providing programmatic assistance, counsel, and guidance for Tutor Advisors (TAs) and for serving as a liaison between full-time staff and TAs, students, and campus officials. The Head TA is primarily responsible for day-to-day operations including assessing, completing, and modifying program activities, as needed, and ensuring completion of TA administrative duties.
Job Responsibility:
Supervise and support the TAs
Work closely with administrative full-time staff to support and implement the Summer Chautauqua
Maintain enthusiasm and a positive attitude during the intensive Summer Chautauqua
Demonstrate excellent communication and writing skills to concisely report student concerns or incidents to UB full-time staff
Demonstrate the ability to be a peer mentor who is caring and responsive to student needs
Attend and actively participate at the Tutor Advisor Orientation Training prior to the start of the summer component
Encourage team building among participants and other TAs
Encourage and facilitate critical thinking and a growth mindset among students
Ensure student activities are creative, interactive, and meaningful at TA family nights, free time, and other scheduled activities
Encourage students to reach post-secondary education goals
Be directly concerned with the safety and well-being of all participants
Listen and strive to understand the needs of UB students
Oversee student behavior modification plan. (TRAC and TA family competitions)
Will be familiar with the Emergency Action Plan
Serve as a stand-in for any TA who is unable to fulfill their duties
Oversee day-to-day operations such as trouble-shooting housing and maintenance issues, and nightly activities
Will be responsible of keeping track of hours worked by all TA’s and report those to the Assistant Director for approval
Be able to effectively delegate tasks to TAs
Be able to determine which tasks are better suited for yourself, office staff or other TAs
All other duties as assigned
Requirements:
Must either recently obtained a Bachelor’s degree or be enrolled in a post-secondary education program for the upcoming fall semester
Must have maintained a minimum GPA of 2.5
Must have completed at least two years of college course work after high school
Experience with low-income, first generation students and/or prior experience with TRIO or similar programs is preferred, but not required
Must demonstrate a desire to facilitate students’ success
