Job Description

We’re looking for an experienced Head of Pharmacy (Superintendent Pharmacist) to lead the governance, compliance, and operational oversight of our pharmacy in Aston, Birmingham. You’ll hold ultimate accountability for ensuring all dispensing, supply, and clinical activities meet GPhC and CQC standards, while maintaining the highest levels of patient safety and professional integrity. You will work closely with our clinical, operations, and technology teams to ensure safe and efficient medicines management, acting as the key link between the business, regulators, and patients.

Job Responsibility

  • Serve as the Superintendent Pharmacist for the business, ensuring full compliance with the Medicines Act 1968, Misuse of Drugs Regulations 2001, and GPhC Standards for Registered Pharmacies
  • Provide strategic and operational leadership across all pharmacy activities, including prescription validation, dispensing, and patient communication
  • Oversee clinical governance frameworks, ensuring risk management, quality assurance, and incident reporting meet internal and regulatory expectations
  • Act as the primary liaison with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC), ensuring all notifications and registrations are accurate and up to date
  • Maintain oversight of controlled drug management, ensuring appropriate recording, storage, and destruction procedures are in place
  • Ensure all SOPs and governance processes are regularly reviewed and compliant with current legislation
  • Lead and mentor the clinical pharmacy team - supporting ongoing training, competency assessment, and professional development
  • Champion patient-centred care and continuous improvement across all pharmacy and clinical operations
  • Support business growth by advising on safe implementation of new products, services, or treatment models
  • Oversee audit and inspection readiness activities, ensuring regulatory compliance at all times

Requirements

  • Minimum 10 years’ experience as a registered pharmacist with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC)
  • Minimum 1 year experience as a Superintendent / Deputy Superintendent Pharmacist or senior pharmacy leader (e.g., Head of Pharmacy, Clinical Governance Lead)
  • Proven understanding of GPhC, CQC, and MHRA frameworks and their operational application
  • Strong working knowledge of the Medicines Act, Misuse of Drugs Regulations, and Responsible Pharmacist Regulations
  • Demonstrated ability to manage audits, regulatory inspections, and compliance reviews
  • Experience developing and implementing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
  • Demonstrated experience scaling pharmacy and warehouse operations, including fulfilment workflows, workforce planning, throughput optimisation, and safely supporting increased order volumes across multiple product lines
  • Excellent leadership, coaching, and people management skills
  • High attention to detail and ability to communicate complex information clearly and effectively
  • Strong organisational and analytical abilities
