Job Description:

Head of Design role for Barclaycard Payments (BPL), tasked with building and owning the design function from the ground up across seven value streams spanning the full merchant lifecycle. The role involves creating design capability, setting standards, and partnering with Product and Engineering leadership to translate customer insight into effective experiences.

Job Responsibility:

  • Own design across value streams
  • Hands-on design and experimentation (wireframes, prototypes, visual design, usability testing, A/B tests)
  • Build, own, and scale a design system
  • Establish design operations and governance (rituals, standards, principles)
  • Recruit, coach, and develop designers
  • Help define key metrics for design maturity, user experience quality, design system adoption, and delivery throughput
  • Lead and facilitate human-centred design excellence
  • Advocate for customers in business decision making
  • Need identification and distillation to support business cases
  • Delivery of high-quality insight and design outputs
  • Problem statement facilitation and prioritisation
  • Evaluation of programme or product risks
  • Customer research, listening, testing and market scanning
  • Implementation of agile ways of working
  • Delivering accurate insight on core CX outcomes

Requirements:

  • Significant experience building and leading design teams in digital product environments
  • Strong portfolio across UX, UI, and service design
  • Experience creating and scaling design systems in complex, multi-product organisations
  • Track record of working within product trios (Product, Design, Engineering) and influencing product strategy through design
  • Quantifiable impact (e.g., reduced task completion time, improved merchant satisfaction, scaled design team)
  • Experience in payments, fintech, or financial services (bonus)
  • Familiarity with merchant-facing products (portals, onboarding, self-service) (bonus)
  • Experience working alongside dedicated research functions (bonus)
  • Understanding of regulatory constraints and how they shape design decisions (bonus)
  • Have built or contributed to a public-facing design system (bonus)
