The Head of Commerce leads teaching and learning across Years 7–12, driving high-quality curriculum and student outcomes in line with MLC's Learning Statement. The role combines strategic leadership with effective day-to-day management, including leading staff, managing resources, and ensuring smooth departmental operations. Overseeing programs in Accounting, Business, Economics and Legal Studies (VCE, VET and IB), the role also collaborates across Years 7–9 to embed commercial understanding. The Head of Commerce fosters a collaborative, innovative team culture and ensures engaging, contemporary learning experiences for all students.
Job Responsibility
Lead the development and delivery of a high-quality, coherent Commerce curriculum aligned with the College's priorities
Drive excellence in teaching practice through the use of data, evidence-based instruction, and effective assessment strategies
Build a culture of high expectations, collaboration, and continuous improvement within the department
Support and develop staff through coaching, feedback, and professional learning
Work collaboratively across the Learning and Curriculum Group to contribute to whole-school strategic direction
Oversee the effective day-to-day management of the department, including staffing, resources and budget
Ensure compliance with relevant curriculum and regulatory requirements (e.g. VCAA, IB, ACARA)
Support student subject selection and pathways through collaboration with curriculum leaders and engagement with students and families
Lead recruitment, induction and performance development processes for staff
Maintain strong operational practices, including assessment and reporting processes, and adherence to the College's policies.
Requirements
Strong Commerce content and pedagogical knowledge
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with a proven ability to build and maintain positive relationships
Well-developed organisational planning and decision-making skills, with the ability to prioritise and manage time effectively
Demonstrated ability to work in a team of professional staff to collaborate and take a leadership role
Proven teaching, educational leadership and management skills, with experience in developing team members
Outstanding teaching with demonstrated excellence in improving student learning
A commitment to professional growth
Ability to manage change and demonstrated ability to support change based on current educational research
An understanding of the program requirements for VCE, VCE VET and the IB Diploma Program
Appropriate qualifications and demonstrated expertise in teaching students
Postgraduate qualifications will be well regarded
Acts professionally and maintains appropriate confidentiality
Participation in co-curricular activities, excursions and trips
Current Victorian Institute of Teaching Registration is required
