Requirements

Proven experience as a Head Gardener/Senior Gardener on a private estate/formal gardens
Horticultural qualifications preferred
extensive hands-on experience will also be considered
Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate and support a small team
Highly practical and hands-on
Excellent plant knowledge, particularly in relation to formal gardens and herbaceous borders
Confident and competent in the maintenance and use of garden machinery
Organised, proactive, and able to work independently
A positive communicator with a collaborative approach and team spirit

Job Responsibility

Lead the daily operations of the gardens
Provide hands-on management and mentorship to two full-time gardeners and two part-time contractors
Maintain and enhance formal planting, herbaceous borders, lawns, and seasonal displays
Oversee care of the pool garden area and presentation of the main drive
Ensure all machinery and equipment is properly maintained, repaired, and operated safely
Plan and deliver seasonal tasks, working with winter and summer schedules
Monitor plant health, pest/disease issues, and apply appropriate treatments
Uphold exceptional horticultural standards and ensure smooth running of the grounds on a daily basis
Liaise with the Principal as and when required

Job Responsibility

Oversee the planning, planting, cultivation, and maintenance of all ornamental gardens, hedges, flower beds, trees, and natural areas
Develop and implement seasonal planting schemes and long-term landscaping plans aligned with the racecourse’s brand and visitor experience
Ensure all green spaces are presented impeccably for race days, hospitality events, and media coverage
Conduct routine inspections to identify maintenance needs, plant health issues, pests, and diseases
Manage greenhouse, nursery, or storage areas where applicable
Oversee the use, care, and servicing of horticultural machinery and tools
Ensure all work complies with Health & Safety, environmental, and COSHH regulations
Manage horticultural budgets, including plants, materials, equipment, and external contractors
Source high-quality plants and supplies, building strong relationships with nurseries, suppliers, and contractors
Maintain accurate stock levels and ensure cost-effective purchasing
