The Haemovigilance Officer will take responsibility for non-medical transfusion related issues and is a member of the transfusion team. He / She will report to Director of Nursing whilst maintaining an effective liaison with the Laboratory Manager and the Head of Department in Blood Transfusion.
Job Responsibility:
Run a safe and effective haemovigilance service in collaboration with clinical departments
Ensure transfusion practice is in accordance with hospital transfusion policies
Revise existing hospital transfusion policy as necessary
Investigate clinical incidents / near-miss events related to transfusion and suspected transfusion reactions
Report on such events to relevant personnel, the Blood Transfusion Committee and the national Haemovigilance Office
Attend the Blood transfusion Committee and follow up on haemovigilance issues
Develop quality assurance and audit systems
Ensure ISO 15189, AML-BB and JCI standards are achieved and maintained
Participate in product tracing and recall if necessary
Liaise and communicate with Heads of Blood Bank, Consultants, Director of Nursing, Medical Scientists, Ward Managers and other relevant staff
Initiate the implementation of new developments in the area of blood and blood products
Provide haemovigilance education at orientation and scheduled updates for Nursing / HCA / NCHD / Transfusion and phlebotomy staff
Act as resource and provide guidance and support for staff and students on the interpretation of hospital policy
Provide information on transfusion for patients as requested
Revise patient information literature as necessary
Maintain an awareness of current developments in Nursing and Transfusion
Maintain an awareness that the patient is central to all hospital activities
Ensure strict confidentiality in relation to the patient’s records
Support the philosophy and objectives of the Department of Nursing / Laboratory
Demonstrate behaviour consistent with the Code of Professional Conduct (NMBI, 2025)
Be aware of her role as a professional and undertake practice within his / her scope of practice
Be aware of legislation / amendments governing / affecting nursing & laboratory professions
Organise and perform activities in an efficient and effective manner
Exercise initiative and diplomacy when dealing with patient care issues
Promote and participate in clinical research activities as opportunities arise
Maintain an up-to-date database of activities
Ensure that such data are available for review, investigation, analysis and audit and compile reports as necessary
Provide regular feedback to Director of Nursing and Nursing Managers on results of surveillance, audits etc.
Be aware of costs and budgetary constraints and facilitate a non-waste approach
Participate in the purchase and management of supplies and equipment related to transfusion and infection control
Requirements:
Current registration with NMBI
BSc qualification preferred
management qualification also desirable
Nursing / Laboratory experience 3 years in total
ideally some experience in a similar role
Have proven Clinical, Leadership, Managerial & Customer Care skills
