This full-time position is part of a partnership between South Dakota Game, Fish & Parks (SDGFP) and Pheasants Forever, Inc (PF). The incumbent will conduct habitat management work on public wildlife management areas as a full-time, permanent employee of Pheasants Forever and will receive daily leadership from SDGFP Field Managers. The position will be based at a SDGFP shop location in Mitchell, SD. The Habitat Specialist will provide technical skills for their fellow habitat specialist crew members and agency partners to positively impact wildlife habitat by restoring and managing grasslands, wetlands, and forests on publicly and owned lands throughout the country.
Job Responsibility:
Conduct habitat management work on public wildlife management areas
Provide technical skills for fellow habitat specialist crew members and agency partners
Restore and manage grasslands, wetlands, and forests on publicly owned lands
Implement habitat improvement practices including grass and shrub plantings, prescribed fire, herbicide and pesticide application, encroachment removal, and equipment maintenance
Work in uneven terrain and remote locations
For Habitat Specialist I: Implement habitat management work on private and public lands
Participate in construction, maintenance, and repair of facilities and equipment
Serve as burn crew member
Report habitat management activities
For Habitat Specialist II: Implement habitat management work on public lands
Assist crew lead to procure supplies and equipment
Participate in construction, maintenance, and repair
Assist with grant reporting
Serve as burn crew member
Report activities
For Habitat Specialist III: Implement habitat management work on public lands
Co-lead procurement of supplies and equipment
Co-lead construction, maintenance, and repair
Assist with grant reporting
Serve as burn crew lead or member
Report activities
Participate in training and evaluation of seasonal employees
Assist or lead hiring of crew and seasonal employees
Supervise invoicing, implementation and planning
Preplan and prioritize work schedule for crew
Direct and implement habitat management work on public wildlife areas
Procure supplies and equipment
Participate in construction, maintenance and repair of facilities, farm equipment, parking areas, and roads
Coordinate agricultural permits
Participate in scientific field studies and surveys
Requirements:
High school diploma or GED
Combination of training and/or experience providing required knowledge, skills, and abilities
For Habitat Specialist I: 1-2 years work experience in wildlife management, forestry, heavy equipment operation, or agriculture
For Habitat Specialist II: 2-3 years work experience in wildlife management, forestry, heavy equipment operation, or agriculture
For Habitat Specialist III: 3-4 years work experience in wildlife management, forestry, heavy equipment operation, or agriculture
Valid driver's license
Ability to work independently
Team player with good oral and written communication skills
Knowledge of wildlife ecology, grassland management, and/or forest management
Ability to utilize various habitat management equipment and tools
Working/functional/advanced knowledge of GPS, digital mapping, reading physical maps, and compass navigation
Passion for Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever’s vision and mission
For some positions: CDL driver’s license may be required
Nice to have:
Associate or Bachelor of Science Degree in Natural Resources, Wildlife Management, Forestry, Environmental Science, or closely related field
Additional field experience
Ability to work out of a home office
Ability to assist in planning state meetings, habitat workshops, legislative gatherings, and other meetings
Ability to keep team’s technology updated with necessary software packages
