Job Description

The role: Our Water Group in Victoria has developed many long-term relationships in the water market, a strong pipeline of work, and has grown into a team of 100 water professionals. We have a continued focus on growth over the next five years. As a part of the growth plan, we are seeking an experienced leader to head our Digital group in Melbourne. Reporting to the Water Business Leader – Melbourne, you’ll play a pivotal role in shaping our people, projects, and future growth across the water sector. You’ll work closely with senior leaders locally and nationally to drive collaboration, support business development, and enhance our market presence. Alongside leading a high‑performing consulting team, you’ll remain actively involved in delivering high‑quality digital solutions (CAD, BIM, etc) for water infrastructure projects (pipelines, pump stations, treatment plants, storages etc), for a diverse client base. You’ll provide strong leadership across your Digital group, supporting your Team Leaders (if applicable) to ensure alignment with our vision, strategy and culture. With a clear understanding of the Melbourne water industry digital market and project pipeline, you’ll play a hands‑on role in positioning and proposal development, leading or supporting pursuits depending on scale and complexity. You’ll work closely with the Business Leader, Project Management and Commercial Leader, Market Leader and Practice Leaders, as well as peers across regions, to drive coordinated, high‑quality outcomes for our clients.

Job Responsibility

  • Supporting the Business Leader in driving both short- and long‑term Water AU strategy initiatives while fostering a collaborative, success‑oriented, inclusive culture
  • Supporting the Business Leader to initiate and manage business development opportunities, prepare proposals, actively participate in and lead client service
  • Responsible for team utilisation, and monitoring and maintaining the correct staffing level and shape based on current and future workloads
  • Foster authentic leadership, open communication, and a collaborative culture to enhance team cohesion, performance, and continuous improvement
  • Participate in projects as either Project Manager, Project Technical Leader or other substantive technical or delivery roles
  • Responsible for the team’s talent management lifecycle including but not limited to
  • recruitment suggestions, career development, employee engagement, succession planning, coaching and mentoring, diversity and inclusion, and leadership development
  • Maintaining awareness of staff mental health and overall wellbeing and actively fostering a positive working culture
  • Work with partner Group Leaders (GLs) / Team Leaders (TLs) locally and in other regions to drive collaboration and work sharing across the BC

Requirements

  • Relevant Tertiary Qualification
  • Minimum of 10 years’ related work, leadership, financial management and consulting experience
  • or an equivalent combination of education and related experience
  • Ability to inspire, mentor, and lead a team to consistently deliver exceptional results for our clients
  • Exercise sound judgment under pressure by analysing information, weighing risks and opportunities, and making decisions aligned with organisational goals
  • To commit to working in the Stantec Melbourne office for at least 3 days / week

  • Extensive experience in civil, structural or community development design and drafting, including hands‑on knowledge of contemporary digital design tools, workflows and standards (e.g. Civil 3D, 12D, Revit, BIM/digital engineering environments).
  • Experience working with offshore or global delivery teams (or the capability to quickly develop this), including managing quality, communication, coordination and timelines across international teams.
  • Strong commercial and project awareness, with the ability to balance quality, programme, budget and resourcing requirements across multiple concurrent projects.
  • The ability to collaborate effectively across business lines, working closely with Project Managers, Practice Leaders, Digital Engineering teams, and global delivery centres to achieve consistent, high‑quality outcomes.

  • Drive the development and adoption of guidelines, standard drawings, design standards, training and marketing materials to improve the consistency and efficiency of our service delivery. This is to be done in alignment with the Practice Leader – Design/Drafting for Community Development
  • Liaise with technical staff across CD and other business lines to help capture, disseminate and drive best practice across the business
  • Engagement with industry to maintain awareness of current standards and industry trends and to advocate for Stantec’s position as a thought leader, through attendance and presentation of papers at conferences, attendance at industry events and through membership of professional associations where relevant
  • Assist in the development of skills in Pune to help grow our capacity and capability in those centres
  • Responsible for the team’s talent management lifecycle including but not limited to
  • recruitment suggestions, career development, employee engagement, succession planning, coaching and mentoring, diversity and inclusion, and leadership development.
  • Review and monitor staff to ensure that performance objectives are being met, staff are engaged and performance issues are managed promptly, an awareness of mental health, and the general well-being of the staff.
