Job Description:

This position assists the Potato Breeding and Selection program in various aspects, including greenhouse, field and laboratory tasks related to the development of new potato cultivars.

Job Responsibility:

  • Perform cross-pollinations
  • Plant, maintain and harvest greenhouse seed stocks for research and for the San Luis Valley Research Center potato seed production
  • Organize and inventory greenhouse seed stocks in preparation of cold storage
  • Extract and inventory true potato seed
  • Maintain a clean and organized work space
  • Mark off, plant and harvest field research yield plots
  • Plant, rogue, maintain, and harvest field generational seed stocks
  • Prepare tubers, fry, and chipper for post harvest testing

Requirements:

  • Ability to work in outdoor field, greenhouse, potato cellar, and laboratory environments
  • Demonstrated communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work evening and weekend hours during peak season
  • Attention to detail, ability to maintain quality records
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of this position, which include ability to lift up to 50 lbs. daily during harvest season and will require manual dexterity, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching and handling
  • Ability to work in environmental conditions to include exposure to weather and noise. Hazards include: working in proximity to moving, mechanical parts and exposure to chemicals used in weed/pest control and fertilization

Nice to have:

  • Experience in an agriculture related field
  • Experience in a lab environment
  • Valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license or access to a licensed driver by start date
