Job Description

We are looking for an experienced Grant Accounting Manager to support grant-related financial operations in Richmond, Virginia. This Long-term Contract position will lead accurate accounting, reimbursement activity, and compliance oversight across federal, state, and private funding sources. The role also focuses on resolving historical accounting issues, improving workflows, and guiding internal teams to strengthen grant reporting and controls.

Job Responsibility

  • Direct efforts to resolve outstanding grant accounting items by researching historical activity, correcting records, and completing reconciliations
  • Manage grant cash requests, remittance activity, and reimbursement submissions to ensure funds are collected accurately and on schedule
  • Oversee the recording of grant-related financial transactions, including accruals, journal entries, and revenue recognition, in accordance with applicable accounting standards
  • Review grant balances, spending activity, and disbursement records to confirm accuracy and consistency with award terms
  • Establish grants in the financial system with appropriate coding structures, supporting documentation, and internal control measures
  • Work closely with finance and operational stakeholders to improve procedures, strengthen documentation, and support ongoing compliance needs
  • Act as the primary resource for grant accounting guidance, advising staff and leadership on reporting expectations and financial compliance matters
  • Identify process and system improvement opportunities within a nonstandard financial environment and help implement practical solutions
  • Provide direction, coaching, and quality oversight to team members involved in grant accounting and related reporting activities

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of progressive experience in grant accounting, including a minimum of 3 years of Federal Financial Reporting experience
  • Strong knowledge of grant financial management, reimbursement processes, and compliance requirements for government and private funding sources
  • Solid understanding of GAAP and its application to grant transactions, reconciliations, and revenue recognition
  • Ability to learn new or custom financial systems quickly and work effectively in an evolving systems environment
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills for analysis, reconciliation, and reporting
  • Demonstrated ability to lead projects or provide team oversight in a fast-moving environment with limited supervision
  • Strong communication and organizational skills, with the ability to coordinate effectively across finance and operational teams
