We are looking for a Grant Accountant to join a non-profit organization in San Francisco, California on a Contract basis. This role will oversee the financial administration of grants and contracts, partnering with internal teams to support compliant budgeting, reporting, billing, and close activities. The ideal candidate brings strong nonprofit accounting experience and can manage funding-related transactions with accuracy while maintaining clear documentation and audit readiness.
Job Responsibility
Build and maintain grant and contract budgets in partnership with program leaders and other key stakeholders to support accurate financial planning
Work closely with program and development teams during funding submissions to help align financial details with sponsor requirements and applicable regulations
Review spending against approved grant budgets, record activity accurately, and investigate differences to help address variances promptly
Create and maintain grant documentation and financial summaries to support appropriate accounting treatment and complete recordkeeping
Administer invoicing and reimbursement requests for funded programs, ensuring submissions are accurate, timely, and consistent with sponsor guidelines
Address questions related to billing and grant finances from external funding sources as well as internal business partners
Contribute to monthly close by preparing revenue accruals, journal entries, and reconciliations tied to grant and contract activity
Support compliance efforts by maintaining readiness for internal reviews and external audits and ensuring adherence to contractual and regulatory obligations
Recommend and assist with workflow enhancements that improve the efficiency and consistency of grant and contract accounting processes
Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline
At least 3 years of accounting experience, including hands-on work with nonprofit grants and contracts
Knowledge of nonprofit fund accounting and grant administration, including experience with government-funded awards
Background in budgeting, financial reporting, and general ledger activity
Advanced Excel capabilities for reconciliations, reporting, and financial analysis
Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications
Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively across departments
Nice to have
Familiarity with grant management, fund administration, NAV-related reporting, or Abila MIP is a plus
