We are looking for an experienced Grant Accountant to join a nonprofit organization in San Francisco, California on a Contract basis. This role is responsible for managing a portfolio of government and city-funded agreements, supporting accurate billing, and maintaining strong financial oversight across multiple reporting cycles. The ideal candidate brings hands-on nonprofit contract billing experience, sound judgment in expense review, and the ability to work closely with internal partners to keep invoicing timely and compliant.
Job Responsibility:
Oversee billing activities for a portfolio of approximately 35 city and grant-funded contracts, ensuring deadlines and funding requirements are met
Review general ledger activity to identify billable costs and confirm transactions are recorded accurately
Assess expenses for compliance and allowability under contract and grant guidelines before invoicing
Maintain organized billing schedules, tracking tools, and supporting documentation for monthly and quarterly reporting cycles
Prepare, reconcile, and submit invoices with attention to accuracy, completeness, and contract-specific requirements
Collaborate with program, finance, and other internal teams to investigate discrepancies and resolve billing questions efficiently
Monitor contracts with varying levels of complexity and adjust billing support based on reporting needs and funding terms
Contribute as an individual contributor in a hands-on accounting role without direct supervisory responsibilities
Requirements:
At least 5 years of accounting experience, including direct work with nonprofit contract or grant billing
Proven background managing government grants, fund administration, or related restricted funding environments
Experience using Sage, Abila MIP, or a comparable accounting platform beyond QuickBooks
Strong understanding of general ledger review, expense classification, and invoice preparation
Ability to manage multiple active contracts with both monthly and quarterly billing schedules
Solid attention to detail and the ability to interpret funding rules to support compliant billing
Comfortable working a 40-hour-per-week schedule in a hybrid environment with 4 days onsite and 1 day remote, except Tuesdays
