Job Description:

GSI for ORGSTUDY 295 Inequity in American Cities. Course discusses how cities create inequality in America, covering segregation, policing, education, immigration, crime, redevelopment. Anticipated schedule: T/Th 2:30 pm-4pm. Estimated effort: 1 GSI position (.5 FTE).

Job Responsibility:

  • Assist in organizing ad-hoc student groups
  • Help facilitate small-group discussions during class sessions
  • Provide assistance and feedback for assignments and content
  • Manage resources for the classroom and any field work
  • Assist in Canvas management
  • Evaluate student work and record grades
  • Search for and screen relevant case studies and classroom exercises
  • Handle other miscellaneous issues related to the course

Requirements:

  • Good standing in degree program
  • Registered for not less than six (6) credit hours (five with advisor approval)
  • For non-native English speakers: effective proficiency in classroom English as per UM/GEO agreement
  • May require GSI-OET test and/or ELI courses
  • First-time GSI must attend 20 hours of pedagogical classes including CRLT Fall 2026 GSI Teaching Orientation
  • Interest in sociology, public service delivery, public policy, urban studies
  • Comfort with interpreting and communicating insights about academic theory and practicalities of city policymaking
  • Strong qualitative analysis and writing skills

Nice to have:

  • Professional experience in related areas
  • Graduate students in related disciplines
  • LSA graduate student preferred
  • Quantitatively oriented candidates with strong qualitative skills
