This position is for a Graduate Student Instructor (GSI) for ORGSTUDY 410: Advanced Research Methods in Organizational Studies. The course focuses on using social science research methods to study organizational adaptation, problem solving, and change, emphasizing interview, observational and survey methods, data analysis, and communication skills. The GSI will support this hands-on, project-based course.
Job Responsibility:
Lecture in whole or in part one or more classes, jointly hold discussion with the faculty, and consult with the students during office hours
Work closely with student teams, advise on research plans, content, analysis, and written and oral reports
Jointly grade the group assignments and final projects with the faculty
Grade the individual assignments, with review by the faculty
Work with students one-to-one and in teams, read and grade research reports, run discussion sessions, and give lectures
Attend every class lecture and discussion sessions
Hold office hours
Meet with the focal organizations as needed with the faculty
Meet with the faculty at least once a week to discuss the class, its progress, and preparation for the following week
Requirements:
Graduate student in good standing with a BA or graduate work in sociology, psychology, or related social science or professional field
Must have training in social science research methods, including qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis
Must demonstrate excellent organizational skills and ability to respond quickly to student and instructor requests
In compliance with UM/GEO agreement, potential GSIs whose undergraduate medium of instruction is not English must be evaluated for effective proficiency in classroom English
To be appointed, a graduate student must be in good standing in their degree program and for Terms I and II, must be registered for not less than six (6) credit hours
A first-time GSI is required to attend 20 hours of pedagogical classes offered by CRLT
Must attend the CRLT Fall 2022 GSI Teaching Orientation (GSITO)
Nice to have:
Experience and comfort working with focal organizations of different types (e.g., businesses, non-profits, etc.)
Experience in project-based classes and/or work in consulting
Someone who enjoys teaching, who likes students, and who has good interpersonal and communication skills
LSA graduate student preferred
