The Government Affairs Specialist works with various internal and external (contract lobby firms, trade groups, etc.) stakeholders to monitor legislative and regulatory activity and develop advocacy positions across federal, state and local governments within the six-state Meijer footprint. This position works in a fast-paced environment to achieve public policy objectives on the Federal, State and Local level and drive new growth within the footprint. The Government Affairs Specialist may act as the point of contact between government officials and employees and Meijer corporate headquarters. The Government Affairs Specialist will be required to register as a lobbyist for Meijer in certain states. This position is reported into the Government Affairs Department.
Job Responsibility:
Creating Government Affairs Team content for internal and external purposes including, but not limited to, policy memos, advocacy letters, legislative analysis, regular internal reporting, etc.
Maintaining and updating internal Government Affairs landing page
Monitor, track and report on federal, state and local executive, legislative and regulatory activity relevant to Meijer and the overall retail industry
Monitor and/or attend committee hearings and legislative meetings as needed across the Meijer footprint
Collaborate with industry associations, coalitions, and other organizations on shared legislative objectives
Develop and maintain internal website platform to regularly share and communicate government and public affairs activity across the business
Prepare regular Government Affairs activity reports for Meijer leaders across the business
Work with internal stakeholders to analyze business impacts and implications of various government policies to assist in advocacy efforts
Assist Government Affairs leaders in developing policy agendas and engage in implementing strategies to accomplish policy goals
Engage internal & external subject matter experts to develop advocacy positions regarding legislation or government related activity
Collaborate with Meijer External and Internal Communications to ensure continuity between advocacy efforts
Requirements:
Minimum bachelor's degree in political science or related field of study
2-4 years of experience in a related field
Proficient in Microsoft Office suite software programs and the use of artificial intelligence tools
Proficient in various social media and AI platforms
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including letter writing
Ability to synthesize complex information and communicate analysis with various stakeholders
In-depth knowledge of the legislative and political processes, and campaign finance and political contribution laws and rules
Nice to have:
Experience with state or federal government and elected officials desired but not required
Existing relationships and contacts within state and federal government desired but not required
