Job Description

Assists the physician while performing endoscopic procedures, including obtaining tissue biopsies. Cleans, sterilizes and maintains endoscopes and all accessories in working order.

Job Responsibility

  • Assist with admission and dismissal of patients
  • Perform periodic focus assessment and report observations to RN or physician
  • Confer with physician and charge nurse regarding changes in patient condition
  • Perform patient care and implement intervention as delegated by RN or physician
  • Set up rooms for endoscopy and colonoscopy
  • Assist physician and /or RN with endoscopy and colonoscopy
  • Clean and high level disinfect flexible endoscope
  • Apply safety and infection control measures
  • Communicate effectively with patient, family, physicians and healthcare team
  • Must be able to perform the professional, clinical and or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department

Requirements

  • Direct patient care experience
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS or BCLS) - American Heart Association (AHA)

Nice to have

  • Six (6) month recent procedure experience
  • Gastroenterology Technical Specialist (GTS)
  • Certified Nurse Aide / Assistant (CNA) - State Department for Aging and Disability Services (KS), Department of Health & Senior Services (MO) - Includes licenses for all other states
  • Knowledge of flexible endoscopes, cleaning and care preferred

  • Assists physicians with accurate retrieval of specimens, specimen preservation, labeling and transportation of specimens to lab
  • Assists in initiating and/or collaborating with the team for all safety initiatives such as timeout process, traceability of equipment used, and reporting of safety events
  • Organizes and prepares procedure rooms and equipment according to each physician's specification, checking and assembling proper instruments and equipment needed
  • Performs high level disinfection and reprocessing of equipment/scopes in a safe and effective manner based on established standards
  • Cleans, calibrates, operates and performs preventative maintenance on equipment according to manufacturer's recommendations and infection control policies and guidelines
  • Reports and documents equipment repairs
  • Documents procedures, images, videos and patient charges utilizing the endoscope and ultrasound information systems
  • Assists in maintaining inventory for unit by informing unit when supplies are needed, stocking supplies, and receiving ordered supplies
  • Performs various clerical duties which includes answering of phones, filing, data entry, scheduling and compilation of patient records
