Job Description:

We are inviting applications for an enthusiastic and dedicated Consultant Geriatrician to join a forward-thinking and supportive team within the South East Region. This is an exciting opportunity for a consultant who is passionate about delivering high-quality, compassionate care to older adults and wishes to contribute to the ongoing development of comprehensive services for frailty and geriatrics. The postholder will play a central role in delivering inpatient and outpatient services, leading multidisciplinary care, and supporting innovation across the care of older people. Job Responsibility:

  • Provide comprehensive inpatient and outpatient care for elderly and frail patients
  • Lead and participate in the delivery of General Internal Medicine (GIM), including acute inpatient work and regular outpatient clinics
  • Contribute to the development and expansion of the regional Frailty Service, supporting both acute and community-based initiatives
  • Participate in the 1:11 general medical on-call rota, providing advice and clinical input when required
  • Supervise and mentor junior medical staff, ensuring high standards of education, training, and clinical practice
  • Participate in departmental audits, quality improvement projects, and service development initiatives
  • Engage in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, contributing to the training of medical students, junior doctors, and nursing staff
  • Work collaboratively with operational and clinical leaders to improve service delivery and patient outcomes
  • Contribute to teaching and supervision of medical students, postgraduate trainees, and other healthcare professionals
  • Participate in clinical audits, service evaluations, and research activities relevant to the speciality
  • Actively participate in clinical governance, morbidity and mortality meetings, and departmental quality assurance processes
  • Support the development of best practice pathways for elderly care, frailty, and rehabilitation
  • Collaborate with clinical and managerial colleagues to enhance patient care and operational efficiency throughout the department
  • Demonstrate a commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion within the healthcare setting

Requirements:

  • MBBS or equivalent medical degree
  • Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP or equivalent)
  • GMC registration with a licence to practise
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register for Geriatric Medicine and General Internal Medicine (via CCT, CESR, or European Community Rights)
  • Minimum of 1 year of NHS experience
  • Completion of recognised training in General Internal Medicine with significant experience in Geriatric Medicine
  • Evidence of excellent clinical skills and sound judgment in managing complex elderly patients
  • Knowledge of current trends and best practices in Geriatric Medicine and Frailty Care
  • IT literacy and familiarity with electronic health systems
  • Demonstrated experience in teaching undergraduate and postgraduate trainees
  • Evidence of participation in clinical audit and governance activities
  • Commitment to high-quality, patient-centred care
  • Strong organisational and leadership skills
  • Enthusiasm for service development and innovation
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and as part of a multidisciplinary team

Nice to have:

  • Higher degree (MD, PhD, MSc, or equivalent)
  • Postgraduate qualification in medical education, leadership, or management
  • Published clinical audit or research
  • Proven record in service development or quality improvement
  • Formal management or leadership training
  • Experience in leading change or service improvement initiatives
