We are inviting applications for an enthusiastic and dedicated Consultant Geriatrician to join a forward-thinking and supportive team within the South East Region. The postholder will play a central role in delivering inpatient and outpatient services, leading multidisciplinary care, and supporting innovation across the care of older people. Job Responsibility:
Provide comprehensive inpatient and outpatient care for elderly and frail patients
Lead and participate in the delivery of General Internal Medicine (GIM), including acute inpatient work and regular outpatient clinics
Contribute to the development and expansion of the regional Frailty Service, supporting both acute and community-based initiatives
Participate in the 1:11 general medical on-call rota, providing advice and clinical input when required
Supervise and mentor junior medical staff, ensuring high standards of education, training, and clinical practice
Participate in departmental audits, quality improvement projects, and service development initiatives
Engage in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, contributing to the training of medical students, junior doctors, and nursing staff
Work collaboratively with operational and clinical leaders to improve service delivery and patient outcomes
Contribute to teaching and supervision of medical students, postgraduate trainees, and other healthcare professionals
Participate in clinical audits, service evaluations, and research activities relevant to the speciality
Actively participate in clinical governance, morbidity and mortality meetings, and departmental quality assurance processes
Support the development of best practice pathways for elderly care, frailty, and rehabilitation
Collaborate with clinical and managerial colleagues to enhance patient care and operational efficiency throughout the department
Demonstrate a commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion within the healthcare setting
Requirements:
MBBS or equivalent medical degree
Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP or equivalent)
GMC registration with a licence to practise
Entry on the GMC Specialist Register for Geriatric Medicine and General Internal Medicine (via CCT, CESR, or European Community Rights)
Minimum of 1 year of NHS experience
Completion of recognised training in General Internal Medicine with significant experience in Geriatric Medicine
Evidence of excellent clinical skills and sound judgment in managing complex elderly patients
Knowledge of current trends and best practices in Geriatric Medicine and Frailty Care
IT literacy and familiarity with electronic health systems
Demonstrated experience in teaching undergraduate and postgraduate trainees
Evidence of participation in clinical audit and governance activities
Commitment to high-quality, patient-centred care
Strong organisational and leadership skills
Enthusiasm for service development and innovation
Ability to work effectively under pressure and as part of a multidisciplinary team
Nice to have:
Higher degree (MD, PhD, MSc, or equivalent)
Postgraduate qualification in medical education, leadership, or management
Published clinical audit or research
Proven record in service development or quality improvement
Formal management or leadership training
Experience in leading change or service improvement initiatives
