The Geotechnical Engineer will support safe and efficient mining operations by providing operational geotechnical monitoring, analysis, inspections, and technical input to identify and manage geotechnical and geothermal hazards. You will assist with ground control management, slope monitoring, data analysis, and field inspections to minimize risk to safety and production in a dynamic geothermal environment.
Job Responsibility:
Conduct routine geotechnical inspections of pit walls, dumps, stockpiles, harbour waste platform, and marine dumps
Monitor slope stability using radar, prism, GNSS, and other monitoring systems
Review and analyse monitoring data and report abnormal movement or trends
Assist with geotechnical drilling, logging, mapping, and instrumentation programs
Support slope reconciliation through Design, Implementation, and Verification processes
Assist with geotechnical and geothermal risk assessments and implementation of controls
Prepare technical reports, monitoring summaries, and presentations for stakeholders
Support investigations into ground movement, instability, and incidents
Provide input into short- and medium-term mine planning and operational designs
Assist in maintaining and improving geotechnical monitoring systems and databases
Support technical mentoring programs under guidance of senior engineers
Actively promotes and demonstrates safe work practices and compliance with site HSE requirements
Works collaboratively with geotechnical, mining, planning, survey, and operations teams
Requirements:
Minimum of 2–4 years’ experience in open pit geotechnical engineering or related mining roles
Experience in slope monitoring, field inspections, and geotechnical data collection
Exposure to operational mining environments is desirable
Sound understanding of open pit geotechnical principles and ground control practices
Awareness of operational safety and risk management systems
Working knowledge of PNG Mine Safety Act and Regulations
Competency in MS Office applications
Knowledge of slope stability monitoring and analysis software
Basic knowledge of geological and mining modelling software (e.g., Minesight)
Familiarity with cost control systems (e.g., SAP)
Good verbal and written communication skills
Strong analytical and problem solving abilities
Good organisational and time management skills
Ability to work independently and within a team environment
