Job Description

Join CSIRO’s Mineral Resources team as a Geophysicist/Engineer within the Sustainable Mining Technologies Program, contributing to world‑class research that delivers innovative solutions across the global minerals value chain. In this role, you will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to support scientific and technological activities, assisting with planning, preparation, field deployment, data acquisition, and the practical implementation of research. Working across laboratory, field, and office environments, you will play a key role in delivering high‑impact outcomes through a blend of technical, operational, and analytical support. With a strong hands‑on focus, you will support the development and deployment of geophysical monitoring technologies and data acquisition systems used in mining and industrial settings. This includes preparing, testing, installing, and maintaining field instrumentation, supporting field trials, and ensuring high‑quality data collection and processing. Partnering closely with geophysicists, engineers, and developers, you will also contribute to data management, analysis, and workflow improvements. Your work will help advance technologies that improve mine safety, operational efficiency, resource recovery, and environmental performance across the resources sector.

Job Responsibility

  • Collaborate within a multidisciplinary team to deliver research, development and technology deployment projects
  • Build strong working relationships through clear, effective communication with colleagues, clients and stakeholders
  • Plan and execute laboratory, field and site-based activities alongside engineers, geophysicists and technical specialists
  • Prepare, deploy, operate and maintain geophysical instruments and monitoring systems across field and lab environments
  • Support field trials, site installations and technology demonstrations, including logistics, calibration and equipment readiness
  • Collect, quality-control and analyse geophysical data, producing clear technical summaries and reports
  • Contribute to software tools and workflows that support data acquisition, processing, visualisation and monitoring capabilities
  • Drive continuous improvement by identifying opportunities to enhance workflows, data quality, equipment reliability and operational efficiency

Requirements

  • A degree in Geophysics, Earth Sciences, Physics, Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or a related discipline
  • Willingness and ability to undertake fieldwork, including travel to mine sites, industrial facilities and remote locations for periods ranging from several days to multiple weeks as required
  • Demonstrated aptitude for hands-on technical work, including the assembly, testing, troubleshooting and maintenance of scientific instrumentation, sensors, electronic systems or data acquisition equipment
  • Demonstrated ability to work safely and effectively in laboratory, workshop and field environments, including the preparation, operation and maintenance of scientific or technical equipment
  • Experience collecting, processing or analysing scientific, engineering or geophysical data using appropriate software tools and methodologies
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills, including the ability to identify technical issues, troubleshoot equipment or data quality problems, and implement practical solutions
  • Experience using scientific or technical software, scripting, or programming tools (e.g. Python, MATLAB, C/C++, or similar) for data analysis, automation or workflow development
  • Current Australian driver's licence and ability to obtain site-specific inductions and clearances required for field deployments
